Softshell jacket or softshell pants – how to choose the best option?

Clothing made from softshell fabric is designed for mobility and comfort.

Softshell garments are most commonly used in active sports and outdoor activities. The word “softshell” means that the clothing forms a “soft shell” that protects against unfavorable weather conditions.

Softshell usually consists of two or three layers, depending on the purpose of the garment. Water-resistant jackets and trousers are made up of an outer fabric layer that repels moisture, a middle membrane layer that provides waterproofing, and an inner fleece that insulates and gives a soft feel. Water-resistant softshell jackets provide both protection against moisture and comfort during movement.

Two-layer softshell garments have lower water resistance but much better breathability. They are often used as a mid-layer, while three-layer softshell garments serve as an alternative under a membrane jacket.

Softshell fabric combines several important properties — it protects against wind and moisture, breathes, and feels soft. It can be worn without thermal underwear during moderate activity, something a regular membrane cannot provide. The outer durable water-repellent (DWR) coating prevents water from soaking into the fabric, although it is not suitable for prolonged rain or intense heat.

Softshell stands out with excellent elasticity and durability. The stretchable fabric ensures freedom of movement, while abrasion resistance protects the garment from damage when in contact with trees or rocks.

Thanks to its properties, softshell clothing is indispensable for hiking, mountaineering, kayaking, and other outdoor activities, providing protection from wind and moisture in various weather conditions.

Tips on what to look for when buying softshell clothing:

  • Make sure you can move comfortably when all straps, cuffs, drawcords, and the hood are fastened. Swing your arms and squat down. The clothing should fit closely so it can wick away moisture more effectively.

  • Check that your outer softshell garment has ventilation zippers. On jackets, they are usually located under the armpits, while on trousers they can be on the inside or along the outer seam. There will be moments when a flow of fresh air will make you a little happier. Choose our softshell trousers, which effectively block wind and ensure breathability even during intense movement.

  • Ensure the seams are taped on the inside, which provides better protection against moisture and wind.

  • Pay attention to the number and capacity of pockets. For such functional clothing, you can never have too many pockets. 5–6 pockets on a single garment is usually sufficient.

  • Check the garment’s hardware. Waterproof zippers from brands like YKK are a sign of product quality.

Softshell vs Membrane Clothing (Hardshell)

Fabric

Softshell: A softshell fabric consists of 2 or 3 layers: the outer layer – stretch polyester, the middle layer – a membrane, the inner layer – fleece. 2-layer softshell fabric is often used as a mid-layer, while 3-layer softshell serves as an outer layer.

Hardshell: Hardshell also consists of 2 or 3 layers, with the outer layer made from a non-stretch polyester fabric combined with a membrane. In some garments, the membrane is laminated on the inside, making the clothing stiffer and more durable.

Properties

Softshell: Blocks wind, repels moisture, breathes, and retains body warmth. Water resistance: < 5000 mm/m²/24h. Breathability: > 15 000 g/m²/24h. Comfort temperature: from +15 °C down to 0 °C.

Hardshell: Blocks wind, repels water, and provides maximum protection against rain. Water resistance: > 10 000 mm/m²/24h. Breathability: < 15 000 g/m²/24h. Comfort temperature: from +20 °C down to +10 °C.

Price

Softshell: Autumn outer jackets start from around €60.

Hardshell: Waterproof membrane jackets usually start from €90.

Use

Softshell: Ideal for hiking, fishing, and activities where mobility, good ventilation, and partial protection are required.

Hardshell: Best for heavy rain, strong winds, and mountain trekking.

Our recommendation: Keep both a softshell jacket and a hardshell jacket in your wardrobe to always be prepared for different weather conditions.
