Essential Care & Washing Recommendations for Hiking Apparel
- Clear the Dispenser: Completely clean the detergent tray to remove any residual powder or fabric softener, as standard detergents degrade technical membranes.
- Prepare the Clothing: Zip up all pockets, fasten velcro straps, and loosen any elastic cords. Place a maximum of 2–3 items in the drum.
- Dosage: Shake the bottle thoroughly before use. Pour 2 full caps (100 ml) of Tech Wash into the tray for 1–2 items (add 3 caps/150 ml if you live in a hard-water area).
- Cycle Selection: Wash using a synthetic or delicate cycle at 30°C with a low spin speed.
- Submerge items in lukewarm water inside a washbasin. Use 1.5 caps (50 ml) of Tech Wash per garment, agitate gently, and let soak for 5–10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly in clean, cold water until clear.
- Air Dry or Tumble Dry: Hang dry naturally or use a tumble dryer on a low, delicate setting if the manufacturer's care label allows it.
- No Heat Needed: Unlike some silicon-based alternatives, Nikwax products do not require heat activation to cure their water-repellent qualities.
- When to Re-waterproof: When water stops pooling or beading up into droplets on the outer face fabric, it is time to restore the DWR layer. Clean the garment first with Tech Wash, then follow with a wash-in or spray-on waterproofer like Nikwax TX.Direct.
